Day 231: Messages in the Car

May 23, 2012

For Wednesday, I cut out one heart from each of four note cards. I wrote “Your love fills my heart” on one and taped it just under the gas gauge in our car. On the second, I wrote “My heart accelerates when I’m with you” and taped that under the speedometer. I wrote “You rev up my soul” on the third, which I taped under the tachometer. On the fourth, I wrote “You keep me cool, baby” and taped it under the temperature gauge:

You thought these notes were a lot of fun!

I came up with a bunch of other expressions for the hearts, but they didn’t quite make the cut:

“You’re full of it” (gas gauge).

“You warn me when I’m moving too fast” (speedometer).

“You keep me cool, baby, like antifreeze keeps an engine cool as it’s passed through the engine block, then through the radiator, then back through the engine block” (temperature gauge).

“You spin me right round, baby/ Right round, like a crankshaft, baby.” (tachometer).

Day 180: Stalker Alert!

March 29, 2012

On Monday, I graded tests at home all day. At some point, you took the girls to Costco. When you did, I wrote out this note for you, biked to Costco, found our van, placed it on our windshield, then biked home:

What?! I just noticed I put "You're" instead of "Your." How embarrassing.

When you came home, I helped you with the girls and the groceries, all the while waiting for you to say something about the note. You told me about Costco and how good the kids were, but the note never came up. After a while, I thought, “She’s toying with me. Well, I’m not going to say anything about it either. I can wait as long as her.”

I started grading tests again, when finally you said something. “I found this weird note on our windshield when I came out of Costco.” “Oh, yeah?” “Yeah, I think someone followed me around just so they could put it there.” “I guess you’re never going out  by yourself again!” I couldn’t help but laugh, which made you laugh. You asked how I was able to pull that off and told me you couldn’t stop smiling after you read it. When I finished grading the test I was on, I flipped it over and this note was under it:

hey good looking,

thanks for the note. I tried the #, but it didn’t work. glad I found you. xoxo

your not so secret admirer

Day 160: Cereal-Box Prize

March 7, 2012

Last night I again had nothing when beddy-bye time rolled around. I didn’t care. I just wanted to do some simple act of love so I could get some rest. But then I surprised myself. I thought of an act so easy, yet so darned cute: I cut out a heart from red construction paper and put it inside a bag of your favorite cereal. But not before writing these words on the heart: “you found the prize—my heart.” The cockles of my heart are warmer just from typing that.

Day 141: Love-Note Video

February 17, 2012

I let nearly the entire day go by yesterday without even thinking about what act of love to do. I don’t blame me—Wednesday marked a kind of end to a big project I’ve been doing for work. So yesterday I just wanted to relax.

At any rate, when midnight came a knockin’, I had no clue what loving act to do. Sleep wasn’t an option. Skipping a day wasn’t an option. Doing an act of love for you before the day’s end was the only option. After mulling over some ideas for about an hour, I decided to film myself telling you I love you and wishing you a good day. In order to preempt jealousy in the ranks, I made a similar video for our daughters. Both videos are in an obvious place on our desktop, so I’m sure you’ll stumble across them.

Day 105: Ecard

January 12, 2012

For my 105th act of love, I sent an ecard to your email account that says I love you and hope you have a good day.

On another note, I’m glad our relationship’s changed for the better because work is getting really stressful and will be continually stressful for a while. Before 365, stress at work resulted in discord in our home. Now, stress at work results in unity. Instead of taking my stress out on you, I look (in part) to you for support, encouragement, and comfort. And you provide it. Of course, there has been some tension in our home since work’s gotten more stressful, but it’s not as great as it would’ve been before 365.

PS: You just walked through the room, but didn’t see what I was doing. It’s likely you’ll find out about this blog before it’s finished, but I’ll work hard to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Day 44: Hide and Seek

November 12, 2011

Last night, I wrote a different note of encouragement on each of 5 note cards, then stuck/hid those cards in different places around the house. Here are the five notes: (1) “You’re beautiful,” (2) “I’m so glad I married you,” (3) “God loves you,” (4) “You’re a wonderful, godly woman,” and (5) “I love you.” I taped (1) to the bathroom mirror because I want you to see yourself as beautiful as you read the note. Also, I want you to see it every morning when you get ready so you can go about your day knowing your husband thinks you’re beautiful. Okay, there’s one more reason: when I get ready in the morning, I want to pretend that the note’s written to me. (2) is in the spice cabinet. I want to say I put it there because marrying you spiced up my life. Although you do spice things up, the cabinet just looked like a good hiding spot. I placed (3) in the towel closet. Again, I had no particular reason for placing (3) there. Although, God loves you even when you need a towel. You’ll find (4) taped to the coffee in the freezer. (5) I put somewhere in the house; but honestly, I can’t remember where. It might still be there as you’re reading this a year from now.
