Day 175: Endurance Hugging

March 23, 2012

On Wednesday, I decided to give you a long hug for my act of love. So while you were making dinner, I brought up the idea with an opening line that really swept you off your feet:

“Let’s hug for some predetermined length of time.”

“Okay, how about a minute.”

“A minute? Are you joking? That’s weak.”

“Fine. How about five.”

“We don’t have all day. What about two?”

“Sure. Should I set the timer on the microwave?”

“Yeah. Wait . . . the two button doesn’t work.”

“Okay, let’s set it for one minute, 59 seconds.”

“Or, we could set it for one minute, 60 seconds. That way we could get our two minutes in.”

“Let’s just stick with 1:59.”

“Okay.”

I set the timer and we started hugging. At first, it felt stilted, which prompted some sarcastic remarks from each of us. But soon, you sank into my arms and laid your head on my shoulders. It was nice. After a while, though, my mind wandered and I began wondering when the timer would go off. So, I gently rocked and turned us at the same time so I could see the mircrowave. There were 30 seconds left. “You’re trying to look at the timer, aren’t you?” you asked. “Two minutes is a long time!” I replied. “I know, right?” For the rest of the time, we jokingly worked on dinner while continuing to hug. I’m thinking we need to work on our hugs.

Day 110: Coffee Card

January 17, 2012

Per my commitment on day 107, I brought back the wildly popular five-dollar coffee card yesterday. Each time I’ve bought you coffee or a coffee card through 365, you’ve showered me with gratitude and affection. Last night was no different.

I needed to do some work after dinner, so I went to my office. Afterwards, I stopped by Starbucks and bought you a five-dollar coffee card and grabbed an empty coffee cup. I put the card in the cup, then came home. When you answered the door, I said, “I know how much you like Starbucks, so I brought you this paper Starbucks cup for you to put coffee in. Do you want me to make you some right now?” “Oh, thanks! I’ll use it for the hot chocolate I just made,” you replied with a comically exaggerated smile. I handed you the cup. You saw the card and shrieked, jumped up and down, and flung your arms around me, hugging me tightly.

Day 103: A Simple Act

January 10, 2012

In my effort to tone down my acts of love (for now) so as not to overwhelm you, I committed a very simple act yesterday: I gave you a long hug and told you that I love you and I’m glad I married you. You very much enjoyed that act of love and reciprocated my words of affirmation with your own. Though my big acts of love are great memory makers for us, I think you enjoy the little acts of love almost, if not just, as much.

Day 76: Laundry

December 14, 2011

Last night, I meant to fold your clean laundry for you. Instead, I accidentally fell asleep on the couch fairly early in the evening and I slept there the whole night. I’ve been tired lately because work’s kept me busy. So, I did Tuesday’s act of love early this morning. I crept into our room while you still slept and folded all your laundry. I didn’t put it away, though, because I honestly don’t know where most of your clothes go and I didn’t want to make too much noise by checking your drawers. Just before I left for work, you woke up and noticed what I did. You smiled, gave me a big hug, and thanked me.
